Press Release - July 15, 2009

On July 8th & 9th the Camdenton Police Department conducted its second installment of the 2009 Operation Safeway to combat aggressive driving. Officers targeted traffic violations that have been identified as contributing to aggressive driving and road rage incidents. A total of 23 warnings and 16 citations were issued during this operation.

During this operation, Officers spent considerable time on East Highway 54 at the new Expressway monitoring traffic due to the recent changes. Officers also targeted West Highway 54 due to complaints received about drivers driving in the center turn lane. City of Camdenton Ordinance Section 814.040 states that NO vehicle shall use the center turn lane for a lane of travel and that no vehicle may travel further than 50 feet in the center turn lane. If a vehicle is attempting to merge into traffic and cannot immediately merge, the vehicle should stop and wait to merge and should signal their intention to merge.

Officer Chris Williams stated that calls are received weekly regarding aggressive drivers. Many times the individuals do not realize that their driving habits are aggressive. Operation Safeway brings awareness to those drivers. The officers distribute a pamphlet to the drivers that includes a self-test for them to evaluate their driving habits. Officer Chris Williams stated that those who were stopped during the operation had a positive opinion of the program.

What is aggressive driving?

Aggressive driving is defined as when "an individual commits a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property”.

What traffic violation can be considered aggressive?

Passing on the right, speeding, following too close, careless and imprudent driving, failure to yield, driving in the center turn lane, improper lane changes and failure to stop at a stop sign or light are considered aggressive driving violations.

What causes aggressive driving?

Crowded roads, road work, stress from other areas of life, dangerous driving attitudes and frustration can often contribute to someone being an aggressive driver.

What if another driver is being aggressive?

If another driver is being aggressive, remember to keep your cool. You can pull over and allow them to pass, always avoid eye contact with them, and remember not to take it personally. Chances are that you aggressive driver is not trying to annoy you. Never try to speak to the aggressive driver, trying to do so may lead to a much more dangerous situation such as road rage. Road rage incidents can escalate to very violent situations within a few seconds. Instead of confronting the aggressive driver, you can get a description of the vehicle, to include the license plate and state of issuance, then report the driver to the local police or sheriff.  You can also dial *55 from your cell phone to get the emergency line for the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

How do you avoid becoming an aggressive driver?

You can help yourself to be a safe and courteous driver by learning to manage stress better, not driving when you are angry, and planning your route ahead of time. You should always treat other drivers as you want to be treated.

If you would like a free pamphlet on Aggressive Driving that includes a self-test, please stop by the Camdenton Police Department located at 437 West US Highway 54, Monday – Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm.

PRESS RELEASE - April 14, 2009

Buckle Up to Avoid a Ticket and Arrive Alive

Nearly one in four Missourians still fail to regularly wear their seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle.

Among those least likely to buckle up:  young males, pickup truck drivers and their passengers, people who live in rural areas, and nighttime drivers.

Camdenton Police Department announced today they are joining with other law enforcement agencies across the state for an aggressive “Click It or Ticket” mobilization on April 15th. Officers will be cracking down on Missouri’s seat belt law violators in an effort to reduce highway fatalities.

Failure to regularly wear a seat belt can be deadly. In 2007, a driver in a Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 32 chance of being killed if they were not wearing a seat belt. In cases where the driver wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,294.

Chief Laura Wright said regular seatbelt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.  For information on Missouri seat belt usage, visit www.saveMOlives.com . One life lost is ONE TOO MANY!
