Press Release

Attention Ghosts and Goblins...Halloween is just around the corner! DARE Officer Jerry Kempen would like to encourage everyone to be cautious during Halloween activities this year! Here are a few guidelines to follow to ensure your child’s safety:

§         Help your child pick out or make a costume that will be safe. Make sure that the costume is flame resistant, the eye holes should be large enough for good vision, and it should not drag the ground.

§         Feeding the kid’s dinner will make them less likely to eat the candy they collect before you have a chance to check it for them. When in doubt, throw it out!

§         Always make sure that your kids have adult supervision when Trick or Treating.

§         Always make sure that everyone walking has some reflective tape or a vest on at ALL times.

§         Always carry a flashlight or glow stick.

§         Stay in familiar neighborhoods, and make sure that the homes are well lit.

§         If you have jack-o-lanterns on your porch with candles in them, make sure that they are far enough out of the way so that costumes won't accidentally be set on fire.

§         Make sure that if your child is carrying a prop, such as a pitchfork, that the tips are smooth and flexible enough so that it would not cause injury if fallen on.

§         Teaching your kids everyday safety such as not talking to strangers, watching both ways before crossing streets and crossing when the lights tell you to, will help make them safer when they are out Trick or Treating.

§         If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.

§         Walk, never run.

§         Stay away from animals you don't know. Some dogs and other household animals can be very protective of their owner’s property.

§         DO NOT ENTER ANY HOUSE OR APARTMENT WITHOUT YOUR ADULT SUPERVISOR!

In an effort to increase safety on Halloween, the Camdenton Police Department will be giving away 1 FREE glow stick per person. There are a limited amount of glow sticks available at the Camdenton Police Department, 437 West U.S. Highway 54, during regular business hours (Monday – Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm). The glow sticks will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Have a SAFE and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

PRESS RELEASE

Camdenton Police Department Urges Parents and Caregivers to

Get Their Car Seats Inspected

Camdenton, MO – Three out of four car seats are improperly installed in vehicles according to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  That’s why the Camdenton Police Department is urging all parents and caregivers to attend a car seat check-up event to ensure their child’s safety when riding in a motor vehicle. As part of National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 21-27) the Camdenton Police Department will have certified technicians available to provide FREE on-site car seat inspections from 12 pm to 2 pm at the Mid-County Fire Protection District Headquarters, 184 North Highway 5 in Camdenton.

“It’s the responsibility of every parent and caregiver out there to make sure their children are safely restrained – every trip, every time,” said Melissa Stradt, Child Passenger Safety Instructor with the Camdenton Police Department.  “We are urging everyone to get their car seats inspected.  When it comes to the safety of a child, there is no room for mistakes.”

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research, 8,325 lives of children under age 5 have been saved by the proper use of child restraints during the past 30 years.  In 2006, among children under 5, an estimated 425 lives were saved by child restraint use.  Research shows that child restraints provide the best protection for all children up to age 8; after age 8 seat belts provide the best protection.

For maximum child passenger safety, Melissa Stradt said parents and caregivers should refer to the following 4 Steps for Kids guidelines for determining which restraint system is best suited to protect children based on age and size:

  1. For the best possible protection keep infants in the back seat, in rear-facing child safety seats, as long as possible up to the height or weight limit of the particular seat. At a minimum, keep infants rear-facing until at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds.
  2. When children outgrow their rear-facing seats (at least age 1 and at least 20 pounds) they should ride in forward-facing child safety seats, in the back seat, until they reach the upper weight or height limit of the particular seat (usually around age 4 and 40 pounds).
  3. Once children outgrow their forward-facing seats (usually around age 4 and 40 pounds), they should ride in booster seats, in the back seat, until the vehicle seat belts fit properly. Seat belts fit properly when the lap belt lays across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest (usually at age 8 or when they are 4’9” tall).
  4. When children outgrow their booster seats, (usually at age 8 or when they are 4’9” tall) they can use the adult seat belts in the back seat, if they fit properly (lap belt lays across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across the chest).

PRESS RELEASE – June 30, 2008

11th Annual Operation Safe Way

July 7-8 and August 5-7, 2008

Camdenton Police Department is pleased to announce dates for their 11th Annual “Operation Safe Way” Campaign. “Operation Safe Way” will begin on July 7th through July 8th and again on August 5th and 7th.  Typical aggressive driving violations include: speeding, changing lanes when it is not safe to do so, passing on the right, accelerating through a yellow light, failure to use turn signals, improper use of the center turn lane, and failure to stop at a stop sign. Aggressive driving often leads to “Road Rage” incidents, that can escalate to very violent situations.

Two specially marked patrol cars will patrol the city, looking for drivers who are driving aggressively. The officers will conduct a traffic stop and explain to the driver why their driving habits can be classified as “aggressive”. The driver will receive an aggressive driving pamphlet, a violation summary sheet, a self-driving evaluation form and information on seatbelt usage. The officer will either issue the driver a summons or written warning for the violation they committed.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is providing a speed trailer for “Operation Safeway”. The trailer will display the speed that the vehicle is traveling. “I encourage all drivers to drive with the highest degree of care every time they get into a vehicle, regardless if they are going 1 mile to the grocery store or 100 miles on a road trip!” stated Officer Chris Williams.

In Missouri between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2007, 285 people were killed and 2,286 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. 70 percent of those killed were not wearing a seat belt; 38 percent of those killed were involved in a crash where speed was a contributing factor. (Statistics provided by MODOT).

Free informational pamphlets are available to drivers at the Camdenton Police Department, 437 West US Highway 54, during normal business hours Monday – Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm.

PRESS RELEASE

On Wednesday, May 21st at approx. 6:10 PM Officers with the Camdenton Police Department received a call to respond to a motor vehicle accident at McDonald’s Restaurant where the suspect vehicle at left the scene.  The vehicle involved was described as a gray mini van with possible damage to the driver’s side.  While responding to McDonald’s, Officers received a second call that a gray mini van matching the description from the McDonald’s accident had just wrecked in CJ’s Restaurant’s parking lot, which is located nearby.

Responding first to CJ’s parking lot, Officers found a gray, 2005 Dodge Caravan that had damage to the front bumper and driver’s side fender. The driver of the van, a 19 year old Camdenton woman, was nearby holding two infants in her arms.  She had sustained cuts and bruising to her arms and legs and both she and the infants had red marks from the seatbelts. Officers observed that the children had been restrained in factory car seats built into the van, but upon impact the entire vehicle seat had broken loose and over-turned inside the van.  Medical assistance was called for but the driver refused treatment for herself and the children.

Upon interviewing the driver, Officers found that she had taken a family member’s van without permission.  While at McDonald’s she had turned too fast, hitting the curb and the electronic sign.  Fleeing the scene of the accident, the driver had taken several back streets, failing to stop for a stop sign on Ha Ha Tonka Street, causing her to wreck in the parking lot of CJ’s Restaurant.

While meeting with the manager of McDonald’s, Officers found that the damage done to the sign and landscaping was extensive, with a replacement value of $16,000.00 for the speaker and sign.

With approval of Department of Family Services, the infants were released to a family member of the driver.  She was transported to the Camden County Jail where she was later released pending filing of charges.  The Camdenton Police Department has requested the following charges:  2 Counts of Child Endangerment, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident, Property Damage and No Valid Missouri Operator’s License.

PRESS RELEASE

On Tuesday, February 26th at approx. 12:30 noon an Officer with the Camdenton Police Department responded to a retail store in reference to a counterfeit bill that had been taken by a cashier during a transaction.  The five dollar bill that was confiscated had been bleached and printed to resemble a one-hundred dollar bill.  The counterfeit bill had not been detected during the initial transaction since the marking pen most retailers use to check for counterfeit currency did not react to the paper since it originally was a true bill.

On Wednesday, February 27th Officers confiscated two additional counterfeit bills from the same retail store and two bills from a local banking facility.  Officers are investigating this crime and have contacted personnel with the Secret Service to advise them of the incidents.  Area banks have also been notified so that they can be on the look-out counterfeit bills that may have come through their facilities.

Counterfeiting is a federal crime that victimizes many individuals and businesses each year.   High-tech criminals continue to change the way they counterfeit, making detection a challenge to law enforcement.

Most authentic bills have a watermark that can be seen by holding the bill to a light source. The watermark is a faded image of the president that appears on that particular bill.  Most bills also have a ribbon/thread embedded vertically that confirms the bills denomination.  Further information to detect counterfeit currency can be found on a government website http://www.secretservice.gov .  It is a valuable source that can give details of how to detect counterfeit bills, enabling the public to protect themselves financially.
