Citizens' Academy

The Citizen's Academy is a course offered to provide citizens with an understanding of law enforcement, how it works, and how we can better work together to provide the best service possible. Applicants must be 18 years of age and live or work in the City of Camdenton. Classes are held once a year and usually begin in February for about six weeks, two nights per week (but this is subject to change.) Class topics include: understanding the law, investigation, traffic control, alcohol and drugs, family issues, community policing, court system, etc.

If you would like more information about the Citizens' Academy, please call the Camdenton Policy Department at 573-346-3604 or E-mail us. All classes are free of charge and are limited to available classroom space.

Comments from past graduates:

  • "I thought it was really interesting, and it's a good idea to get the community involved in helping the police better understand what goes on that they miss."
  • "All instructors had prepared for their seminars. I thought it was good that all officers were involved. This gave us different points of view."
  • "It is awesome to be able to meet the officers and know their name, not just see the suit."
  • "I enjoyed the hands-on training and examples; firing range, traffic stops, crime scene and mock trial."
  • "The whole thing was great."
  • "All officers are very competent. It would be nice if the community was aware of this and appreciated what they do."
  • "It is a great asset to get to know the officers and be able to put "Member of Citizen's Academy" on a scholarship form!"

Community Service

The Community Service Officer (CSO) takes care of several different jobs to relieve the regular officer on the street. This allows the officer on the street to better protect the citizens of the community by not being tied up on non-emergency calls. Following is a list of jobs that the CSO handles to free up the regular officers on the street.
  • Animal Control - The CSO patrols the City of Camdenton for loose animals or complaints of animals. He/she also keeps records of registered licenses on dogs and cats. The CSO may also issue citations for violations of the animal ordinances.
  • Property Maintenance - The CSO is required to check for any violations of the property maintenance ordinance throughout the City of Camdenton. Anyone disobeying this ordinance by not cutting their lawn or leaving junk around can be warned and also issued a citation for this violation.
  • Parking Control - Parking complaints and illegal parking violations are also conducted by the CSO. His/her job is to act on complaints of timed parking areas by marking tires and returning to see if any violations occur. The CSO also assists regular officers in traffic control such as accidents or heavy traffic problems.
  • Unlock Vehicles - The CSO helps the regular officers on the street by answering calls such as people locked out of vehicles. This service is a courtesy to the community and is usually a non-emergency situation. Feel free to call us if you lock yourself out of your vehicle. You are required to sign a waiver of liability due to possible chance of damage to the vehicle.
  • Cross-Walk Duties - Working the cross walk during school hours is another job the CSO has. This allows the regular officers to be available for street and emergency duties.
  • Court Bailiff - The CSO acts as court bailiff during court proceedings.
  • Running Errands - Any errands needed done by the City Hall or Police Department are performed by the CSO.

School Resource Program

The School Resource Officer (SRO) is not a new program. Schools have used police officers for many years to keep the peace and deter violence in the schools. Some of the responsibilities that the SRO handles include:
  • Keeping the Peace - The SRO walks the halls and patrols the school. He/she is visible to the students to try and deter any type of problems that might occur on or around school grounds.
  • Investigations - The SRO is in charge of taking any offense report that takes place on school grounds. He/she is also in charge of investigating such offenses.
  • Student and Police Communications - The SRO also works as a link of communication between students and officers. This closes a communication gap that has developed in the past several years between the public and police. The SRO communicates with the students, bringing back the concept of the policeman on the beat when policemen were friends with the communities they served.
  • Educating Students - The SRO assists the teachers by planning classroom time with students to help teach them about community laws and safety issues. Not only is the SRO responsible for helping the students with their problems, but also for teaching small courses in the classroom to give the students a better knowledge of our laws and ways to protect themselves from being victims of crime.
  • Emergencies - The SRO is equipped with a radio to handle any type of emergencies that can develop. They are also trained in all aspects of emergency situations.
